January 3, 2008 – Philadelphia, PA – Puppy mill profit is occurring right in our community and "Reach Out for Animal Rights" (ROAR), a local grassroots group, is determined to make everyone aware of it. This Saturday will mark one year of ROAR's weekly educational outreach against one of the largest puppy mill profiteers in Philadelphia: Monster Pets.
Not only does Monster Pets contribute to the deaths of thousands of homeless animals, they also make money from the suffering of the parents of pet store puppies. Monster Pets is known to work with the infamous Hunte Corporation, possibly the largest puppy broker in the US. Hunte has multiple Animal Welfare Act violations from the United States Department of Agriculture. Hunte's puppies are purchased from puppy mills all over the country, trucked like merchandise to pet stores like Monster Pets and then sold to unwitting customers. ROAR's attempt to put a stop to this business will continue this Saturday as they observe their one year anniversary of outreach with yet another demonstrat ion.
What: One Year Anniversary of Outreach at Pet Store Demonstration
When: Saturday, January 5, 12:00 pm to 1:00 pm
Where: Monster Pets, 1946 S. Columbus Blvd., Philadelphia PA
ROAR's peaceful approach to educating the public has become increasingly successful throughout the year. At every Saturday demonstration ROAR brings attention to the hundreds of adoptable animals waiting for homes in city shelters and rescues. People are urged to adopt not buy. Carloads of Philly folks are now aware of the origin of the majority of pet store animals because of ROAR's bold informative signs. After accepting ROAR's informational flyers about Monster Pets, potential customers often choose to spend their money at humane alternative stores.
Some of ROAR's members dedicate their time to helping rescue homeless animals. They deal with the nation's pet overpopulation crisis first hand. One of ROAR's members is the guardian of a rescued puppy mill parent. "When members of ROAR found out about the pet store – puppy mill connection we made it our mission to let everyone know! Rest assured, we won't stop reaching out until Monster Pets stops selling animals," says Rachel Ogden, the organizer of ROAR's outreach events.
